This webinar is English Webinar 5.3, Voice of America: Current Event Activities in the English Language Classroom. This webinar explains how to use resources from Voice of America (VOA) to teach current events in the English language classroom. Current events is events in the present concerning important people, places, things, or ideas. We can access current events on internet, newspaper, magazines, tv, radio, social media, and podcasts. The objectives of webinar are to understand what current events are and why they are important, to learn about the benefit of using current events in the English language classroom etc. In addition, it is exaggerated why we teach current events in the English language classroom. There are seven reasons. First, it builds language ability in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Second, it builds new vocabulary. Third, offers endless topic that connect to all areas of curriculum. Next, keeps students aware of events happening locally, nationally, and internationally. Then promotes critical thinking. Next motivates students to have further discussion. The last but not the least it can inspire students to become active in their communities.

Teaching current events becomes more important nowadays. Besides keeping the students aware of events and issues happening, current events and issues offer endless topics that continually build the students’ language ability and vocabulary as well as the students’ critical thinking. The webinar 5.3 examines how to use resources from Voice of America (VoA) to teach current event activities in the English language classroom. VoA covers the world’ stories. The easy access of VoA can be one important consideration of why it is used. Moreover, the American accent is interesting. This webinar shares examples of teaching content and sources. It also explains strategies how to manage the content. For my class, news jigsaw activity and podcast creation may be fun and make the students enjoy. But, a class project with current events is the best since it integrates four language skills. As my students are from oil and gas industry, the topics of science and technology will engange them more in the classroom activity. What an amazing video it is, Mr. Rudi.
BalasHapusThis session discusses about the use of current event topic or issues taken from VOA news as the resources of conducting an EFL class. The use of current event topics from VOA news will build students’ four language skills. It trains students to actively decode the news and comprehend it. As the result, the news will keep the students up to date. Finally, it is hoped that by comprehending the current news, they will be encouraged to think critically and it finally lead them to be more active in expressing their opinion and idea through by both speaking and writing.

It is important including the current events in teaching and learning process. The students will able to build their four skills and vocabulary. BalasHapusFor the first time, I thought VOA (Voice of America) is a documentary program which just can be accessed through TV satellite. Then, I know that VOA gives many benefit for people. It is a rich source that provides news, videos, English learning, etc. People also can access it easily through internet, TV, and radio. Teachers or lecturers can use VOA as a media and source in their teaching learning process, especially in English language classroom. However, after watching this version of webinar, I have just realized that the program is very useful in supporting teaching and learning process especially in EFL classroom. Learning through VoA means we keep on updating to the recent information that happens around the world. In addition, learning through this kind of media can build students’ language ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing; build their vocabulary, keep them awake of events happening locally, nationally, and internationally, promote their critical thinking, etc. Besides that, learning English though VoA can be done anytime and anywhere since the program can be accessed online/offline and on radio program. For many people who have learned about English and interested in learning English, VoA may not be something new for them. It is not only provides the latest update of the events happening in the world, but also the culture. Students can get so many benefits from VoA. The students will keep updated from the latest news provided by VoA. They also will try to comprehend the news by learning to listen to the news and they will learn new vocabularies. Besides forcing them to elaborate their knowledge, they also build their skill which involves four skills in English.
