Assalamualaikum sir, my name is debby mulya. i'm your 1st semester graduated student on friday-saturday class.I have watched this webinar, and i personally think that humor can be used as a strategy to teach the students to learn material become interesting. It can also be used as a trick to overcome the boredom in classroom while there're alot of material that should be taught in the classroom. I think as a teacher its better to have sense of humor. It is sucha medine to reboost students' motivation to learn as well as to reduce stress or feeling burden in the classroom.
Assalamu'alaikum, sir. I'm Yeni Ikawati, a student of TLTL lecture on saturdays at PPS UNNES.
Well, before, I do thank you for sharing us webinar videos. And feel glad to give comments on your blog, sir.
Well, I'm not a teacher yet, and I haven't either done any practices yet, but I'm taking notes of everything that I found interesting on web.
After watching AE Webinar series 4.1, it's about 'the role of humor and language play in the English language classroom', I found some interesting and informative activities. One of them is 'wake up and go to bed'play. This activity looks suitable for young learners. We can adapt it for low proficient students. And the materials relevant to this activity are like TENSES, PASSIVE VOICE,DIRECT-INDIRECT,etc..
next comment will be an example of adaptation activity for language play I made
Below's an adaptation I've made of 'wake up and go to bed' activity by using material PASSIVE VOICE:
[if the students consist of 24 or more or less] - divide them into 4 groups - so each group will consist of 6 members - get them to sit in circle - give initial for each member (for example: student1, student2, etc.) - teacher is necessary to give glance at information about PASSIVE VOICE and how this activity will work - get them to sleep. walk around each group and give each member card/paper consist of word/s in jumble (for example:student1 (MY FATHER), student2 (ME), student3 (A NEW BLUE BICYCLE), student4 (BROUGHT), student5 (ACTIVE:arrange the words from student123 into active voice), student6 (PASSIVE: move the active voice into passive) - get all the students5 and students6 comeforward to write their answers on the board - thanking and complimenting are necessary - corrections and comments in feedback session are needed to give them better understanding of PASSIVE VOICE.
Assalamu'alaikum Wr. Wb. Hello, Mr. Rudi. I am Aswika Pestiana (0203515096), one of your students in post-graduate program khusus 2 in State University of Semarang. After watching video of American English Webinar Series 4.1 entitled "The Role of Humor and Language Play in the English Language Classroom", I think if it is an interesting topic. I think that humor helps students to develop their analytical thinking skills and to achieve command over the language in question. It is added that humor can be an aid to enhance the writing skills and to nurture the creativity of students. Humor and language play in the English language classroom are commonly conceptualized as types of creative language use. Their role can motive students in learning English well because they feel comfort and happy in the classroom. I will use humor and language play in my English language classroom later. I'm looking forward for the next series. Thank you for sharing, Sir. Wassalamualaikum wr wb
Assalamualaikum Wr., Wb. Nice to meet you Mr. Rudi Hartono. You have great educational blog, Sir. My name is Yudha Pambudi Wibowo. I’m your student and my SIN is 0203516002. I’m a graduate student of kelas khusus of State University of Semarang. I have watched AE Webinar 4.1. The Role of Humor and Language Play in the English Language Classroom. I teach in Junior High School. So, this video give useful application to be implemented in language instruction in my school. The presentation od David Chiesa and Stephen Skalicky is very interesting. There are 3 aspects of humor : thing, person, and humor. It helps relax the students. Functions of humor are : making students feel comfortable, establishing and maintaining relationships, coping with difficult topic and punctutations, stress relief and relaxation, for fun. The presenters tells also about types of humor : narrative, puns, and riddles. However there are some challenges in implementing humor in classroom such as : too personal, humor might offend someone, humor is not serious language, humor needs cultural knowledge, and humor is for advanced learners. Last but not least, the provided examples give me inspiration in humor application in language classroom. Thanks for sharing this video Sir. Wassalamulaikum Wr. Wb.
Assalamu'alaikum Wr.Wb it's great to meet you sir. I'm Fuad Abdul Majid student of first semester of post graduate in week end class. you have a wonderful blog that gives us additional knowledge. After watching the American English Webinar series 4.1 that was talk about the role of humor and language play in the English language classroom, I just want to highlight one of points in the seminar that sometime humor and play is necessary and needed in teaching and learning process. Teacher who includes the jokes or humor in teaching will help to relax the students. Further, the students will feel comfortable during the learning process and it will decrease the level of students’ stressful when getting the knowledge from the teacher. In addition, student who gets stress in learning process, student cannot focus on the teacher’s explanation, student prefer to do another activity that make him more enjoy rather than listening to the explanation. Furthermore, humor also can establish the relationship between teacher and student or between student and another student. thank you for sharing sir. Wassalamu'alaikum Wr. Wb
Assalamu'alaikum Wr. Wb. I'm Kharis Subkhan, your student in post graduate kelas khusus. Before watching the webinar, i personally think that humor is, indeed, an important thing to make students not bored, however i usually use it only for entertainment, but after watching this webinar, i change my mind that humor can also be included into some teaching material. This webinar show me how to create a joke, that's why it become more interesting. Another benefits from watching the webinar is that i, now, know more about natural English joke. Hopefully we all can apply some joke for our students so that teaching activities will be more likely alive and effective. Thank you very much for sharing sir. Wassalamu'alaikum Wr. Wb.
Assalammu'alaikum Wr. Wb. I'm Fina the student of PPs kelas khusus. I found that the theme about humour is interesting since I'm also in progress of writing it as my thesis subject. Humour should be implemented in everyday life style, especially in the class session. It will help the students to study in a comfortable way so that English as the subject and the teacher as the facilitator are not boring and frightening in the students point of view. Thank you for sharing Sir. Wassalammu'alaikum Wr. Wb.
