Hi, my name is Rury Restu Afifah(2201413149) Email Rury.afifah@yahoo.com in this last session of webinar is talking about culturally relevant teaching under the topic of “Make it meaningful: Bringing learning to life with culturally relevant teaching” by Tabitha Kidwell. In her presentation she discuss about the advantages of four aspects in culturally relevant teaching and practical teaching ideas related to those four aspects. The four aspects of culturally relevant teaching are about relationships between students and teacher, materials, language, and activities. In this method of teaching the teacher have to learn about “youth culture” and spend time with students outside of class in order to build relationships between them. Thus, I realized it is a huge task for Indonesians teachers since there is a great gaps between students and teachers unless in western country such as Venezuela. In Indonesia the relations between students and teacher is limited only on politeness. The materials, language, and activities in culturally relevant speaking are arrange to build on students’ prior knowledge and similar to students’ outside-of-school experiences, for examples, writing Email, using open-ended question, and write or speak about students’ own lives. Finally, I would say that there are many inspiring ideas provided in webinar from the first webinar until this sixth webinar. Thank you.

This webinar’s topic is “Make it meaningful: Bringing learning to life with culturally relevant teaching” by Tabitha Kidwell. Kidwell explained the advantages of four aspects of teaching and learning. The four aspects include the relationships between students and teacher, materials, language, and activities. Based on this method, it is important that the teacher learns “youth culture”. S/he also has to build a good relationship with the students; s/he can spend some times with them for example. However, spending time with students outside the classroom is rather difficult because of the limitation of time. These four aspects are needed to build the students’ knowledge.
Thank you for sharing such an inspiring post.

Assalamualaikum,
BalasHapusDear Mr. Rudi, I am Iif Nur Afifah, your student at Post Graduate Program at Unnes. I always follow your webinar session. Here, I am so interested in talking about culture. Yes, we are as Indonesian people have low confidence and low motivation. Unfortunately, these characters are not good in learning. Through “Make it meaningful: Bringing learning to life with culturally relevant teaching” by Tabitha Kidwell, we can know about the four aspects in culturally relevant teaching, they are: relationships between students and teacher, materials, language, and activities. In this method, the teacher should spend the time with the students in order to build good relationship. This kind of activity actually has been done in Pondok Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) but unfortunately we never take good things from this. Hopefully, this method can be applied by the teachers so that they can build good relationship to build good learning. Thank you.

Assalamualaikum Pak Rudi.
BalasHapusI am Muhammad Khoirul Fuadi, your student of graduate program.
From the topic of “Make it meaningful: Bringing learning to life with culturally relevant teaching” by Tabitha Kidwell, I think that it is important to involve our culture in our lesson in the class especially in the lesson material.
Besides that, from her explanation, there are four aspects of teaching learning process including the relationships between students and teacher, materials, language, and activities. Based on that, to teach our classroom with culturally relevant teaching, the teacher also has to build a good relationship with the students, to make them comfort and enjoyable. In addition, the activities of teaching and learning can be carried out nicely.
Thus, for me as teacher, I think this method is very useful in order to improve my ability in teaching.
Thank you, Pak Rudi for sharing this to me.

The last topic of webinar flash inspires me to teach and to be up-to-date teacher.
BalasHapus"Make it Meaningful: Bringing Learning to Life with Culturally Relevant Teaching". Truly, it can lead me to know how to teach my classroom with culturally relevant teaching. More students we teach more cultures and differences we have in the classroom. The presenter explains clearly about four aspects of culturally relevant teaching relate to students and teacher, materials, language, and activities. Through this teaching method the teacher must know about students’ culture and spend a lot of time to adapt with them. For those, it will give a great task for Indonesians teachers since there is a huge gaps between students and teachers. As eastern country with several norm and role. Indonesia put much limitation in any relationship, including relation between teacher and learner. This norm become great limit that hardly possible to bring relevance culture to the classroom.
What a wonderful idea! it will impossible to know the result before we apply it in our classroom. so this inspiring idea will be carried out to my classroom so that the classroom will be more complex and enjoyable.

From the webinar, I could see that this topic is touching today's need very much. This will answer the complicated problem in Indonesia, especially teaching English as foreign language. Cultural approach is demanded nowadays because this is what actually appear in Indonesia. The local wisdom is taking much role to build the education, cultural, people perspective and personal framework. Cultural approach in the term of learning could maximize and bringing nearer problem with the solution. In my opinion, today's problematic in teaching and learning language could be answered by this topic of webinar. This is closed enough to the problem to solve the problem in teaching and learning.

BalasHapusHello, Mr. Rudi. I am Aswika Pestiana (0203515096), one of your students in post-graduate program khusus 2 in State University of Semarang.
The sixth webinar entitled "Make It Meaningful: Bringing Learning to Life with Culturally Relevant Teaching" delivers by Tabitha Kidwell.
She explained the advantages of four aspects of teaching and learning. The four aspects include the relationships between students and teacher, materials, language, and activities. However, participating in culturally relevant teaching essentially means that teachers create a bridge between students’ home and school lives, while still meeting the expectations of the district and state curricular requirements. Culturally relevant teaching utilizes the backgrounds, knowledge, and experiences of the students to inform the teacher’s lessons and methodology.
Based on that explanation, by using culturally relevant teaching, the teacher can create a good relationship with the students in the classroom, to make them feel comfort and enjoyable in teaching and learning process. Besides that, the activities of teaching and learning in the classroom can be carried out well.
I'm looking forward for the next series. Thank you for sharing, Sir.
